Aperture Aperture, measured in f-stops, controls light entering a camera lens and affects image depth. Lower f-stops allow more light and blur backgrounds, while higher f-stops are better for well-lit, sharp landscapes. It\'s a key factor in choosing between prime and zoom lenses for desired photographic effects. |

With an incredibly wide and fast f/2.8 aperture, the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM lens unleashes new creative potential for photographers and content creators. Weighing just 165g, this impressively compact and lightweight optic delivers stunning 16mm ultra wide-angle views, making it the ideal take-anywhere lens for spontaneous shooting opportunities.
Offering a versatile range of features in a remarkably portable form factor, the RF 16mm F2.8 STM punches above its weight. It captures expansive scenes with ease, from sweeping landscapes and tall cityscapes to tiny interiors and everything in between. The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture excels in low light, produces pleasing background blur, and creates striking sun stars for standout landscape and architectural photography.
Vloggers will love the 16mm focal length that effortlessly fits single shooters in the frame with room to spare – it’s easy to film high-quality handheld or mounted video. The stepping motor (STM) enables smooth, near-silent focus transitions for excellent autofocus in both stills and video recording. As well as still photography and video, the RF 16mm F2.8 STM also suit real estate, events coverage, astrophotography and more.
As part of Canon’s revolutionary RF lens system, the mount offers new creative possibilities by opening up a world of emerging technologies like in-lens optical stabilisation. Despite the tiny size, image quality does not suffer – with an aspherical lens reducing chromatic aberration and enhancing clarity and contrast. The electronic focusing ring provides precise control too.
At this price point, the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM lens is very competitively positioned as a surprisingly affordable addition to expand your RF system. For EOS R series camera owners looking to dip a toe into ultra-wide-angle shooting, it’s a no-brainer.
With its 16mm ultra-wide-angle focal length, the RF 16mm F2.8 STM captures stunningly expansive scenes. Fit more in the frame with sweeping landscapes, tall buildings, expansive interiors and more. The angle of view suits a diverse array of photography styles, from architecture and real estate to environmental portraiture, astrophotography and vlogging. Compared to traditional wide-angle zooms, the 16mm prime focal length provides an even greater width for a dramatic impact.
Measuring just 40.2mm long and weighing a mere 165g, the RF 16mm F2.8 STM is astonishingly compact and portable. The lightweight body means you can carry the lens everywhere, while the tiny proportions won’t add bulk to your EOS R series camera. The small size allows impressive discretion as well, enabling candid documentary images. Despite the diminutive size, image quality and construction standards have not been compromised.
Offering a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, this 16mm optic gathers ample light for handheld shooting in dim conditions. Blur backgrounds by opening up to f/2.8, while the seven-blade diaphragm renders pleasing bokeh when required. The fast aperture also produces striking sun stars for captivating landscape and architecture photography featuring the sun in the frame.
An internal stepping motor (STM) drives the autofocus mechanism, achieving quick and quiet performance. Smooth focus transitions are suited to both stills and video recording, providing a consistent experience across formats. With electronic manual focusing available too, accurate control is assured for creative focus adjustment.
A minimum focusing distance of just 0.13m at the 16mm focal length allows you to move in tight on details and small subjects. Fill the frame with characteristic perspectives by closing focusing on patterns, textures and more at this proximity for a sense of dynamism. Applying this close-up potential expands the lens’s creative flexibility even further.
Employing one aspherical lens element within the optical formula controls spherical aberrations and curvature of the field to realise a high level of clarity across the image frame. Chromatic aberrations are also minimal, further enhancing resolution. With a total of nine elements arranged in seven groups, the optical design maximises quality despite the compact form factor.
Shoot in regular full frame dimensions or engage APS-C crop mode for tighter framing equivalent to 25.6mm. This dual shooting option comes in handy when you need more reach or want two distinct perspectives for added flexibility during use. Activating Focus Bracketing and Focus Stacking modes via the camera body also expands potential.
The Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM Lens is compatible with the following Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras:
Offering an ultra-wide and fast prime optic in a highly compact form, the RF 16mm F2.8 STM’s portable design and versatile capabilities make it ideal for vlogging, real estate, landscapes, Astro and more.
The Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM lens punches well above its weight. For its tiny size and price tag, this optic leverages the RF mount system to deliver impressively wide perspectives in a take-anywhere form factor. Images showcase plenty of detail too thanks to the advanced optics and effective aberration handling.
We love using this lens for selfie-style filming where fitting yourself in the frame can otherwise pose challenges – the wide coverage handles this with ease. Vlogging is an obvious application, as is real estate photography and any shooting requiring expansive views. The stepping motor autofocus strikes the right balance of speed and smoothness for both photos and videos as well.
Wide-angle primes tend to command lofty prices, so we appreciate this f/2.8 version brings ultra-wide shooting to a broader audience. Landscape and night sky photographers will enjoy the bright aperture too for low-light situations. Plus, utilising crop mode gives you a tighter 25.6mm perspective option when required.
While the plastic exterior reflects the affordable cost, it feels reassuringly robust during everyday use while the weight saving helps no end for portability. All in all, we strongly recommend the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM as a highly compelling portable prime lens and a fantastic value addition to an EOS R series kit bag.

With its incredibly wide 16mm perspective, fast f/2.8 aperture and STM autofocus, this impressively compact and lightweight lens is ideal for handheld videography and photography like vlogging, landscapes, real estate tours, astrophotography and more.
At 16mm on a full-frame Canon EOS R series camera, this lens offers an ultra-wide 108° diagonal angle of view to easily fit expansive scenes in the frame from small interiors to sweeping vistas. It delivers unique perspectives.
Unfortunately, there is no built-in image stabilisation. To eliminate blur from camera shake when shooting handheld still photos or video, Canon recommends using this lens on a body with In-Body Image Stabilisation like the EOS R5 and EOS R6.
The relatively fast f/2.8 maximum aperture provides a degree of flexibility for available darkness shooting. Combined with a high ISO setting, you can capture stunning handheld low-light images or astrophotography scenes.
Whilst not reaching the optical standards of L-series glass, the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM still delivers good clarity across the frame along with reliable autofocus thanks to the RF mount system. It offers astonishing value given the tiny size and cost.
