Enjoying nature during lockdown

Table of Contents

I hope you’re continuing to keep safe and looking after each other during lockdown. Nature seems to be reclaiming spaces vacated by a stay at home humans. You may have seen this video that’s been doing the rounds on social media:

So it’s definitely as good a time as any to see your local wildlife. How is it best to view them?

Binoculars are an obvious way of seeing much closer without disturbing the animal. My personal preference for wildlife is to go for 8X magnification as they allow more light and a wider field of vision. 10X will give you more magnification but the angle you see will reduce. I wouldn’t recommend higher than 10X though and if you did want more would suggest a spotting scope with a tripod. The 2nd figure on binoculars is the diameter of the exit glass. I would suggest an 8X42 is best for wildlife, however if you want smaller binoculars there are some excellent 8×32 and 8×25 (these would also be available in the 10X magnification). When looking for binoculars I would suggest to keep to well known brands like Opticron, Zeiss and Swarovski.

Wildlife at night can often be difficult to capture, especially as you might want to have a kip too!  There are night vision products, however I would suggest letting a nature camera do the work for you and have a look at the footage in the morning (stills or video). Like a camera, these come with different capabilities. However I would definitely go for one with a black flash so the animal is not disturbed. We have tried out a number of different models and suggest the Dorr range is a brand to try.

This is a great activity to try while on walks or even from the bedroom window. Maybe you can have a competition with your friends to see how many species you can spot from your bedroom window?

As always keep safe and we are available if you have any queries.
