As a family run business, we have been part of the Cambridge community since 1955. In fact, our founder (and grand father) Thomas Howell, inherited Campkins when it was a chemist on Rose Crescent and he transformed it into a thriving photographic business. Thomas continued to work a 5-day week at Campkins Camera Centre up to his 94th birthday. His son, Barry Howell, took over the reins as Group Managing Director and built our business over decades dedicated to a passion in photography and excellent customer service. This saw Campkins expand into Bond Street in London and Grafton Street in Dublin and attend the Farnborough Air Show for 50 years in a row (we love to take pictures of all those planes). Thomas’s grandson, Owen Howell, has continued the family tradition and is Manager of Campkins Camera Centre. Owen’s approach to business is no different to his grandfather’s: A continued emphasis on putting the customer first, providing expert advice and delivering superb after sales care.
Our proud heritage gives us the edge over our competitors and ensures we operate successfully in a growing online retail world that has aggressively saturated the photography market. The market continues to provide great variety, but an increasingly complex world for customers. We understand that people who have a passion for photography want to get advice from people who share that passion. Our team are dedicated to providing advice on our range of photographic equipment that suits the needs of the customer. So we ensure our customers make the right choice. We love welcoming people into our shop so we can help them leave with the satisfaction they have made the right decision. This unflinching approach to customer care is what we are proud of.
