Aperture Aperture, measured in f-stops, controls light entering a camera lens and affects image depth. Lower f-stops allow more light and blur backgrounds, while higher f-stops are better for well-lit, sharp landscapes. It\'s a key factor in choosing between prime and zoom lenses for desired photographic effects. |

The Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G sets a new standard for versatility in a fast standard zoom lens. Weighing only 440g, this remarkably compact lens packs leading-edge optics and features a rugged dust and moisture-resistant design ideal for photographers and videographers on the move.
Covering wide-angle to standard perspectives, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G captures expansive landscapes, tight interiors, portraits and more with superb sharpness from edge to edge. Four aspherical elements ensure high resolution throughout the zoom range while a constant F2.8 aperture produces the deep, creamy bokeh for beautiful subject isolation. Fast, nearly silent linear motors quickly achieve precise focus for stills and smooth AF transitions when shooting 4K video.
With comprehensive controls including customisable focus hold buttons and a de-clicked aperture, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G empowers creators with the response and reliability needed for spontaneous shooting opportunities. A minimum focus distance of 0.19m provides a maximum magnification of 0.3x for intimate close-ups. As a lighter, more affordable alternative to larger 24-70mm F2.8 zooms, it’s easy to see why this lens belongs in every Sony shooter’s camera bag.
The FE 24-50mm F2.8 G maintains a bright, fast F2.8 aperture at all focal lengths. This allows photographers to achieve shallow depth of field effects and work in low light conditions. The constant aperture also provides exposure consistency when zooming from wide 24mm perspectives to standard 50mm framing. Videographers will appreciate the ability to seamlessly adjust focal length without exposure shifts.
With a wide-angle to standard 24-50mm zoom range, this lens covers expansive landscapes and architecture at 24mm down to natural perspective portraiture at 50mm. The convenient walkaround range means fewer lens changes in fluid shooting scenarios. The minimum focus distance also drops from 0.30m at 50mm to just 0.19m at 24mm for unique wide-angle close-up opportunities.
Four aspherical elements and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements ensure high resolution and minute detail is preserved across the zoom range. By minimising chromatic and spherical aberrations, images appear crisp from edge to edge even when shooting wide open at F2.8 with smooth out-of-focus bokeh.
Dual linear motors drive the autofocus swiftly and silently, keeping pace with high-speed burst shooting cameras like the α9 series at up to 120 fps tracking rates. Smooth focus transitions when shooting 4K video at up to 120p make this a versatile production lens.
In addition to autofocus capabilities, videographers and photographers have access to physical focus, zoom and aperture rings for precise creative control. The aperture ring also features customisable click stops to adjust exposure silently.
A minimum focus distance of 0.19m at 24mm allows for unique perspective experimentation and expansion into macro photography. Users can fill the frame with small subjects and achieve a maximum magnification of 0.3x for intimate detail examination.
The lens features dust and moisture sealing for use in inclement weather and challenging environments. The front element also has a fluorine coating to repel oil and water. Weighing just 440g, the lens offers respectable heft to withstand daily use.
Pairing versatility with outstanding optics and precision in a rugged design, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G tackles spontaneous shots or challenging lighting situations – making it the perfect travel companion lens for creators on the move.
When Sony announced the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G standard zoom lens, there was a lot of excitement around its compact size and bright aperture. After spending some time shooting with this versatile optic, it’s clear that it lives up to the hype. This may prove to be a sleeper hit in the Sony mirrorless lens lineup for enthusiasts and professionals.
In our Sony FE 24-50mm lens review, we found it to be remarkably lightweight at just 15.7 ounces. The handling is excellent thanks to its shorter length than traditional 24-70mm F2.8 lenses. The aperture ring, focus ring, and zoom ring all provide pleasing torque and response. The dust and moisture-resistant design gives confidence to carry this lens anywhere without worry.
Optically, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 impresses across its useful range. Images show excellent sharpness and colour rendition at all apertures, even when shooting wide open at F2.8. Bokeh’s background blur has a pleasing character that doesn’t call too much attention to itself. The minimum focus distance of just 0.19m allows for creative close-up perspectives not typically possible with lenses in this zoom range.
Autofocus performance is snappy and accurate thanks to Sony’s linear motors. Shooting at up to 10 frames per second on the A9 II, we saw a very high percentage of tack-sharp images. Video shooters will love the smooth fast focus for gimbal work or interviews. The aperture de-click switch also makes this a versatile cinema lens.
For the price, it’s difficult to find any notable faults with the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G. It finds a nice balance of size, speed, optics and affordability. If you shoot events, portraits, landscapes or any variety of subjects, this standard zoom belongs on your camera. We can easily recommend it as an everyday workhorse lens for both photo and video needs.
