The Sony A7 IV raises the bar for full-frame cameras with exceptional image quality and performance, redefining the original benchmark established by the Sony A7 III. The new model incorporates many of Sony’s most advanced imaging technologies, such as the latest BIONZ XRTM processing engine and advanced AF (autofocus) capabilities based on the flagship Alpha 1 model, as well as streamlined operability and enhanced reliability for photos and movies, making it the ideal all-around camera for today’s imaging enthusiasts and professionals who shoot in a variety of situations.
The Sony A7 IV also has 33 MP resolution, rich movie expression, and a variety of functions to suit the rising need for remote communication, giving new meaning to what a “basic” camera can do.
The new Sony A7 IV is the ideal hybrid camera, offering exceptional still image quality as well as developed video technology with better focusing, improved operability, and processing flexibility. The model was also created with the environment in mind, utilising Sony’s original recycled plastic SORPLAS for the camera body and packaging made from recyclable materials and less plastic.

Sony A7 IV Digital Camera – Body Only£2,399.00
Outstanding image quality
Superior image quality and a wide ISO sensitivity range extended to ISO 50-204800 are accomplished using a newly designed 33MP full-frame back-illuminated Exmor RTM CMOS image sensor. The camera’s high resolution allows it to convey seamless gradation, tiny details, and textures of the subject while minimising noise. Its 15-stop dynamic range provides for a wide expressive range, while Creative Look settings make it easy to create unique styles for both stills and video.
Next level AF performance
The newest processing engine, BIONZ XRTM, utilised in the flagship Alpha 1, provides high-speed AF, continuous shooting at 10fps[ii], AF/AE tracking, and a huge buffer for a smooth shooting experience. The Sony A7 IV uses tenacious Real-Time Tracking and 759 phase-detection AF points in a high-density focal-plane phase-detection AF system that covers roughly 94% of the picture area to track people. In addition to people, Real-time Eye AF can now follow the eyes of birds and animals in both still photos and videos for the first time. When compared to Alpha 7 III, the detection accuracy for the human face and eyes is roughly 30% higher.
Evolved movie technology
The Sony A7 IV inherits real-world movie production technologies, such as S-CinetoneTM, which was adapted from Sony’s highly respected Cinema Line cameras, which are utilised by a wide spectrum of filmmakers and content producers, to offer a rich, cinematic appearance. 4K 60p recording in Super 35mm mode and up to 4K 30p recording with 7K oversampling in full-frame mode provide high-quality video. The new camera also has 10-bit depth 4:2:2 colour sampling for realistic gradation, XAVC S-ITM intra-frame encoding for more efficient editing processes, and XAVC HSTM compression for increased compression efficiency.
To satisfy the rising need for accurate AF performance when shooting videos, the Sony A7 IV with a Sony E-mount lens achieves unique AF capabilities such as AF Assist that enables focus transitions when using AF and Focus Map that visualises depth of field. For the first time in the Alpha series, the new camera has Breathing Compensation, which can be turned on or off to counteract focus breathing and keep a constant angle of vision throughout focus shifts.
Advanced operability as a genuine hybrid model
The Sony A7 IV is a hybrid still and movie camera with excellent operability and dependability that allows the user to quickly transition from photo to movie and back at their leisure. A dual-layer mode dial is new to Sony’s Alpha camera lineup, with the lower layer for selecting Still/Movie/S&Q and the top layer for Auto/P/A/S/M and MR (Memory Recall), allowing users to rapidly pick and switch between the specific settings.
It also boasts 5-axis optical in-body image stabilisation for a 5.5-step shutter speed advantage, a redesigned grip for increased comfort, and a CFexpress Type A media slot for media with quicker writing and clearing. Furthermore, the 3.68 million-dot (about.) OLED Quad-VGA viewfinder has 1.6 times the resolution of the Alpha 7 III viewfinder, allowing users to benefit from the improved live-view picture quality, which reduces false colour and enhances resolution.
Thanks to the camera’s heat-dissipating construction, videographers may record 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 footage continuously for more than an hour. Optical picture stabilisation in ‘Active Mode’ aids in video filming. They may also take use of the 3.0-type 1.03 million-dot (approx.) vari-angle touch-panel rear LCD monitor, top-panel REC button, and high-capacity Z-series battery.
The magnesium alloy body of the Sony A7 IV achieves toughness while minimising weight. Furthermore, the revised construction and lens lock mechanism help to improve dust and moisture resistance.
Enhanced workflow capabilities
By offering a variety of connectivity options, the Sony A7 IV enables on-the-spot streaming and sharing of high-quality content to meet the growing need for remote communication in real-time without sacrificing excellent image and sound quality. The connection between the camera and mobile application Imaging Edge Mobile is simplified via Bluetooth, and fast data transfer is possible by 5 GHz/2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
The camera also has a new feature called “Shot Mark” to enable easy access to the marked scenes in a video clip, within the camera and on Sony’s Catalyst Browse/Prepare applications.
What’s more, the camera has a range of new features to support live streaming and remote communication without the need for dedicated software. UVC (USB Video Class) and UAC (USB Audio Class) turn the Sony A7 IV into a high-performance live streaming camera when connected to a computer or smartphone. High image quality such as 4K 15p and 1080 FHD 60p deliver realistic video for remote sharing and the Sony A7 IV digital audio interface can be paired with a range of mics and accessories to deliver high-quality sound.
Finally, Sony plans to offer a new cloud service, “AI Video Editing Studio”, for automated editing with AI technology. To allow creators to focus on more creative tasks, “AI Video Editing Studio” automatically performs initial editing in the cloud, using AI technology.
Sony will continue to strive to offer a wide variety of imaging experiences and services through the active integration and advancement of cameras, cloud, and AI.
Designed with the environment in mind
According to Sony’s environmental efforts based on the “Road to Zero“, the environment was an important factor in the development of Sony A7 IV design, production and packaging. The camera uses recycled plastic, SORPLAS, which does not depend on non-renewable resources and is produced at the sites using renewable energy such as solar power generation. The product packaging also adopts recyclable plastic-reduced materials.
