Optical Performance

The LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO is made up of 14 lens elements in 10 groups, including one aspherical ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lens, one aspherical lens, three ED lenses, and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens. The use of aspherical lenses allows for high descriptive performance and beautiful bokeh, while the ED lenses effectively suppress chromatic aberration. Despite its compact size and lightweight (approx. 345g), the LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO has a macro capability of 0.25 (at 14mm) to 0.5x (at 28mm). It also has a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m at all zoom ranges, making it suitable for close-up shots with beautiful bokeh and for sweeping landscape shots in ultra-wide-angle views.

AF and Video Performance

The LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO has a smooth, silent operation that works well with the camera’s high-speed, high-precision AF system, with a sensor drive of up to 240 fps. It also has a focus-shifting mechanism for both non-linear and linear settings, and sensitivity can be adjusted from 90 to 360 degrees for the intended focus operation. In addition, the lens has a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which can be a problem with lenses designed for still image photography. It also has a micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure change, making it suitable for professional-quality video recording.

Design and Durability

The LUMIX S 14-28mm F4-5.6 MACRO and the LUMIX S 20-60mm F3.5-5.6 lens have a similar overall length and position of control parts, which makes it easy to exchange lenses quickly with minimal balance adjustment when the camera is on a gimbal. Both lenses also have a similar weight and centre of gravity. The lenses are also designed to be dust/splash-resistant, making them suitable for use in harsh conditions down to -10° Celsius. The front lens element also has a fluorine coating for water/oil repellency, and an ND/PL filter with a 77mm diameter can be attached.
