Nikon has announced the new NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S, an incredibly lightweight super-telephoto prime lens for the Nikon Z mirrorless system. Weighing just 1,390g (3.06 lbs), it’s the lightest 600mm lens on the market and opens new possibilities for handheld super-telephoto shooting.

The innovative lens incorporates Nikon’s Phase Fresnel optical technology to achieve the long 600mm focal length in a remarkably compact and portable form factor. The PF element with its concentric grooves allows for dramatic reductions in weight and size compared to conventional lens designs.

Despite its lightweight body, the lens still delivers professional-grade ruggedness including extensive weather sealing and a fluorine-coated front element. Optically, the NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S adheres to Nikon’s esteemed S-Line standards for advanced optics and exquisite image quality.

Two ED elements and a short wavelength refractive glass element minimise chromatic aberrations and colour fringing for stunning sharpness and clarity. The fast, quiet stepping motor AF drives rapid autofocus, while the in-lens VR provides 5.5 stops of image stabilisation for steady handheld shooting.

According to Nikon, the 600mm focal length when paired with the lightweight build makes this lens uniquely suited for handheld panning shots at fast-paced events like auto racing or air shows. For wildlife and sports, the lens allows users to capture spontaneous moments with more freedom of movement.

The ultra-telephoto perspective compresses perspectives and isolates subjects creatively. Yet it can still focus as close as 4 meters for frame-filling shots of birds and other active wildlife. When additional reach is needed, it’s compatible with Nikon’s teleconverters to take it up to 840mm or 1200mm f/13.

The NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S continues Nikon’s push to bring high-end technologies like Phase Fresnel into more affordable lens options for enthusiasts and pros. It provides premium optics and specialized focal lengths in smaller, lighter packages compared to older tech.

The lens represents an exciting option for Z series shooters looking to enjoy the creative benefits of super telephoto reach for everything from wildlife and sports to distant landscapes.
